Collar vs Harness: what the science actually says
A collar on a calm dog is harmless. But the moment your dog pulls, all that force lands on a few centimetres of neck, right where the windpipe, thyroid and jugular sit. Here is what published veterinary research found.

Researchers also tested every common collar type on a simulated neck. Padded, flat, wide or narrow, the conclusion was the same:
"All collar types produced pressures high enough to risk injury to the neck when the dog pulled."
A chest harness moves that same force onto the chest and shoulders, the part of the body built to push and carry. And behaviour studies found harnesses do not make dogs pull more.

The hidden damage: what happens under your dog's collar
Your dog coughs when they hit the end of the leash, shakes it off, and keeps walking. Most owners see this every day and think nothing of it. The cough is the warning sign.
4cmA pulling dog concentrates their full bodyweight onto roughly 4cm of neck, over the trachea and cervical spine, walk after walk.
The risk is not wearing a collar, it is repeated force through it. An ID collar on a loose leash is fine. The damage starts the moment the leash goes tight, and it scales with how hard your dog pulls, which is exactly why strong breeds are most at risk.
"Training takes weeks. Moving the leash to the chest removes the neck pressure on the very first walk."
Keep the collar for ID tags. Move the walking to a front-clip harness: the chest attachment redirects pulling into a gentle turn, so your dog also loses the leverage to drag you.
